Biographical Statement

I live north of Chicago. In the morning, I teach and practice Yoga. After that, I paint in my studio. At night I go home to my crumbling house. where three cats, two laughing, singing parrots. one dog and one adored husband are waiting for dinner.

I practice Chan Meditation under the guidance of Carl Jerome of Mid America Buddhist Association.

Artist Statement:

My work is an encounter with the sacred. In each painting, I attempt to convey an alternative to violence by making visible a more highly evolved response to the suffering of the modern world.

Using ageless symbols in a modern Western context of painterly form, I depict regular human beings ' male and female, black, brown and white ' as the iconic embodiments of spiritual enlightenment. Influences range from Kamakura-era Japanese sculpture to the paintings of Rothko and Michelangelo, from the visionary art of Tibet to the Fayoum paintings of second-century Egypt.
